Party of Delusion

If the Republican party is going to recover from the well-earned defeat they have coming next week, it will require an honest assessment the reasons for their failure from conservative leaders and thinkers. I’ve seen little evidence that Republican-oriented conservatives are up to the task.
A good example is this post from Robert Stacy McCain, who was engaged in some preemptive complaining about media spin of next week’s election. McCain describes the GOP as “the party of low taxes, limited government, traditional values and strong defense.” Only the part about taxes is accurate. the GOP would be more accurately described as the party of tax cuts, debt, cronyism, aggressive war and cultural resentment. The formula that worked for a couple of election cycles, but the party’s chickens have come home to roost.

Yes, republicans have failed. The emphasis should be on conservative principles, not party affiliation. The GOP has taken the conservative vote for granted, the Democrats have dismissed the conservative vote altogether. But the responsibility rests in the hands of the voters. Our politicians have slouched because we have allowed it. We have to be more active, more organized. We have to be ready for BIG fights. Not just this election or next election. Not just local elections or national elections. We have to fight in every election from now on. We have to fight for every vote in every legislature. We can do it, but we will have to work hard and invest lots of time (and some money too). And we can’t get lazy (when we inevitably have great successes). Complacency is what got us into this mess. This is a great and powerful nation and we enjoy incredible freedom and wealth and security. But we will lose it all if we stay lazy. I think our nation is “circling the drain” politically, and that is SCARY. But as a nation, we have overcome much greater obstacles with our traditional values and we can do it again if only we set our minds to it.
*Final Note: Obama is ahead in the polls. Sitting out the election is a vote for Obama. You don’t even have to get out of your chair to help Obama win!

For these people, “introspection” apparently means sticking your head up your rectum.
McCain cannot sell conservative ideas, and hasn’t cared to. The party itself is imploding because they haven’t been responsible conservatives for the last 8 years. As far as many people are concerned, this is a referendum on trickle down economics, a referendum on Iraq. And McCain is on the wrong side of those issues. So all he has now is the race-baiting, McCarthyistic red scare bs.
Blaming the media allows Republicans to continue deluding themselves about where the American public are with regard to the issues. They haven’t tried selling it, and even if they were, no one would trust them after the last 8 years.
