waiting by the phone

We just got a much anticipated phone call from our daughter, who is on a junior year abroad program in a city near Mumbai. She’s fine. But, she told us, she had been at one of those bars hit by the terrorists a few weeks ago. Deeprak Chopra is on the TV. Among other things, he says that the Al-Qaeda and like minded terrorists are really worried by Obama, and his capacity to transform the whole moral-intellectual landscape between the West and Islam, and are striking out to try to prevent that. Sounds about right to me.

Glad to hear that your daughter is safe this Holiday season, Mr. McConnell.
I found it intriguing that both FoxNews and NPR reported that Americans and Britons were the intended targets of the attacks even though there haven’t been any American casualties confirmed nor have the terrorists been apprehended, much less interrogated. I know that India revers seers and psychics, but I wasn’t aware their intelligence service employed them.
Also inaccurate is the claim that western hotels were targeted. The two hotels named in the news piece (a Taj Hotel and an Oberoi Hotel) belong to Indian-owned chains. That said, they’re frequented by westerners.

Thank God your daughter is fine.
I never thought I’d say this, but Deepak Chopra seems right. If he is, al Qaeda is doomed to fail, especially given news like this three-week old story from India itself: Muslim clerics endorse anti-terror fatwa.
Gee, good thing we have Obama to save us from that rascaly Islamofascist threat the neocons have warned us about. After all, we can’t cut and run in the war against Islamofascism, and if Obama can bring us victory, he should be praised.
So says The American Conservative? Have you all lost your minds?
I very much doubt Chopra. Why would they attack in India if that was the case? India is not in the West. Moreover, Obama by his appointments is already showing that he is captive to the same interests that US foreign policy (and domestic policy) is always captive to. The man ran a content free campaign — the content for his administration will be supplied by the same old crowd.
Excuse me but each side says the terrorists are scared of them! Of course an Obama supporter is talking him up! Just what does he know? Scott, your arguments for Obama’s foreign policy and his “capacity to transform” are very ludicrous. Remember Jimmy Carter and Camp David? It did no good in the end

Glad your daughter is safe.
…pet peeve - its Bombay not “mumbai’ which is a nonsense name. Steve Sailer has a lengthy comments section about it today. The only people who say Bombay are ultra pc liberals and the media… “mumbai’ has all the sticking power of “Avenue of the Americas”
It appears that most have missed the obvious sarcasm in Scott’s concluding comment.
First, Deepak Chopra commenting on Al Qaeda? Can anyone believe Scott was anything other than howling with laughter at that one? Second, to stop Obama? From doing what? He hasn’t announced an intent to actually do anything in foreign policy except withdraw from Iraq which it appears has been reduced to the question of a timetable by the SOFA.
Surely TAC readers must have a better sense of humour.
