Earth Hour Power

Posted on March 28th, 2009 by Clark Stooksbury

I can think of few things more pointless than turning your lights off from 8:30 til 9:30 tonight to “vote” against global warming. The Earth Hour about page says:

For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.

If it has any effect, Earth Hour is likely to be counterproductive by convincing people that global warming is a problem that can be solved by symbolic gestures. It will also lead to responses like this from Nashville blogger, Glen Dean, who writes, “I am going to run the washer, dryer, and dishwasher. I plan on turning on all lamps, overhead lights, flood lights, porch lights, and I’ll probably even run the ole box fan, in spite of the fact that my AC will also be on. I’ll even crank up both vehicles and probably sit and rev up the one that smokes.”

Earth Hour promises to accomplish as much for the environment as hopping in your car and driving to an “EarthFest” on Earth Day.

  1. I agree. I will turn on everything in my house, car etc. I will leave them on for two hours. This global warming is a hoax. To bad we will all be dead before the population finds out they have been taxed for a political grab.

  2. for me each hour is an Earth hour! I mean I’m always very careful about not wasting anything, energy included. I think of this as a conservative value, no matter if the global warming is true or not.

But I think being careful not to waste makes me a liberal in the eyes of many “conservatives” here. Just listen to Rush Limbaugh! To them being conservative means: spend baby, spend! Like crazy!

  3. Ours was called, “You Light Up My Life Hour” brought to you by The News Factor. But in fairness, I also calculated my Carbon Footprint and am pleased to report my Home Energy total use is 54% BELOW the national average and my Total Greenhouse Gas Emissions are 64% BELOW the national average. I bet my next paycheck that beats Al Gore!

  4. I watched Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” just before earth hour in Singapore. I felt ashamed that I am so ignorance of the issues on global warming and climate change.

I managed to find some good sites and learned more about Renewable Resources. I hope the use of renewable resources and reverse the damages of global warming.

Hope there are more activities like Earth Hour to promote awareness among people like myself. We need to get serious about saving the planet

  5. I am all about getting on the bandwagon. Did anyone notice that Obama never mentions nuclear power. Funny, that’s all he preached on the campaign trail. One more lie. They are adding up to a scary total.
