Neocons for Ahmadinejad

What will they do without their favorite bogeyman, M.J. Rosenberg wonders:
The New Republic’s proprietor, Martin Peretz, is already writing that Ahmadinejad doesn’t matter anyway. He’s obviously scared that the crazed Holocaust denier will disappear.
Daniel Pipes, on the far right edge of neocondom, flatout says “I would vote for Ahmadinejad,” so reports Daniel Luban in Inter Press Service (IPS).
At this point no one knows what will happen on Friday. But one thing that becomes clear as the neocons pray for an Ahmadinejad victory: there is no limit to what these people will support or endorse in order to achieve their goal of a civilizational war with Muslims, absolutely nothing. Don’t think they are motivated by love of Israel (which is obviously better off with Ahmadinejad gone). They are motivated solely by hatred of Muslims. (See this hate piece by fringe neocon columnist Debbie Schlussel who says that even though the Holocaust museum killer is a white supremacist, the attack was the fault of the Muslims).
I don’t think Rosenberg is right about that, Schlussel aside. The neoconservatives are blinded by ideology, a political zealotry so mind-warping it leads people who think of themselves as pro-Israel to support policies (and politicians) that only sow strife throughout the Middle East. Their actions are contrary to their professed intentions — but that’s what ideology wreaks.

Do you, then, have no ideology?
Not in the Kirkian sense. The casual sense of “ideology” as any set of ideas touching upon politics is a different matter, but ideology as a pseudoscientific system of idees fixes to which the world must be made to conform is something I most definitely reject.
Maybe a more moderate Iran (to go along with the newly moderate Lebanon) would be enough to cause the neocondom to burst, so to speak.
The Neo’s would still have Syria to obsess over. Bogey men can always be found in the middle east so there will always be a reason for America to do their dirty work.
I read somewhere that one of the principle Christian factions in Lebanon is allied with Hizbollah electorially. Perhaps someone should call Dr Hagee? Surely all we dumb Chrisitians know who the bad guys are, or do we?
“Kirk, thou shouldst be living at this hour …” Thanks for this post, Dan.
I believe that of the nations in the Middle East, Syria is the most tolerant. I have a Greek Orthodox priest friend who walked down a street in Israel in his clerical robes. He was spit on by local Jews. While Syria has a thriving Christian community, it seems that Israel wants to drive not only the Muslims, but also destroy the ancient, ancient Christian communities in Palestine and primarily by making life very difficult for them. Who knows? The recent National Geographic article speaks to this. It will be interesting to see AIPAC’s and the like’s response to the article. The interesting thing about the attempting to restrict the Bomb in the Middle East is that it has a Biblical precedent. Except during the brief time of David and Solomon, the Israeli’s lived in the hills and not along the seacoast. And when the Philistine dominated the coast, they would not permit iron to be sold to the hill dwelling tribes of Israel. As the restriction on weapon possession failed three thousand years ago, so it will fail now.
