Ahmadinejad’s Coup

That’s how dissident former Iranian foreign minister Ibrahim Yazidi characterizes yesterday’s election in an interview with Robert Dreyfuss. Juan Cole, meanwhile, outlines reasons for thinking Ahmadinejad’s re-election was fixed. The best place to follow developments is Twitter, #iranelection

  1. How completely can we trust incoming first-hand accounts and photographs?

I don’t know, especially when they relate to a situation that is as politicized and religicized as the Iranian situation is, but if you click on my name, you can read an account of students being thrown off roofs, arrested by the hundreds, bloodied, and perhaps even threatened with knives.

Things in Iran are not good. It seems as though a lot of people in the streets are (unknowingly) endorsing Juan Cole’s analysis.

That said, we probably can’t know for sure yet what is going on.
