My deepest gratitude to Buckley owed to his graciousness in debate/discussion. It wasn't just good manners, it was quite apparently more fun. It also exemplified the obscurable truth that strong clashing views, seriously, unabashedly, pungently advanced, needn't and shouldn't reduce interlocutors to personal emnity. If we can't attain his style, we can the essential humilty embedded in his attitude of respect toward those with whom he disagreed. That idea I would like as a relic in the contemplation of his legacy.
