I'd like to see "archconservative" become a thing. Who's with me? And our abbreviation could be “archons." Is that blasphemous or anything?

and I think some of them would eschew the label paleo for various reasons

Ah, come on, it's tough enough for some people on the left to wrap their heads around the fact that there is a significant body of conservatives on the right who (a) despise Bush and the current Republican party (almost) as much as the left does, and (b) tends, on balance, to be more anti-interventionist than the typical "progressive," without expecting us to understand subtle distinctions between (say) paleos and traditionalists.

I kid, I kid. Actually, I wish I was more conversant with the various shadings on the "dissident right" though I guess it wouldn't kill me to do some more research.

That's true. There are a number of people on the dissident right (and I think some of them would eschew the label paleo for various reasons) who are backing Obama in spite of himself, so to speak, and far more than I would have thought possible a year ago. There is a certain logic to their position, and I was becoming more sympathetic to it in recent weeks, but it seems to me as if backing Obama is for paleos the electoral version of undertaking a major project without having thought through the consequences. It is a perfect example of hoping for the best, when it is precisely an optimistic mindset that keeps getting all of us into trouble.

What's significant, in my view, isn't the fact that most paleos aren't lining up behind Obama, but that, despite the fact that most of his views are antithetical to them, many of them are.

Juxtapose the support Ron Paul got from the left. A mirror image, except that (a) there was probably less left support for Paul than Paleo support for Obama, and (b) at least Paul really is a non-interventionist, so his left supporters had at least one real issue to bases support on. Whereas paleos who support Obama are doing so despite an interventionist (but likely somewhat less interventionist than McCain) foreign policy.

I say this as an outsider (i.e., someone who is secular/socially "libera," and who increasingly identifies as left libertarian).
