The intensity of the reaction against him was the result of feeling that Obama had not lived up to the image, much of which they projected onto him, of Obama as an acceptable liberal politician

My feeling is that they ignored him because they didn't think he was the real deal this year.

Hillary was a "lock."

Now, they are going after him and the worse thing they can come up with is statements by his preacher.

The promise of Obama is the first 3/4s of the Philadelphia speech when he offers an interpretation of American history that acknowledges its sins without invalidating the judgment that it has redeemed and will continue to do its founding premises. The disappointment comes when he reverts to the material in the final 1/4 which doesn't merely consist of traditional statism but is also laced the invective that makes conservatives mad. Economic insecurity results from the decision to ship jobs overseas for mere profits. The only way to care about the education of lower income children is to spend more money, etc. Its inclusion cum exclusion.

Is Obama really one or the other? Worse, is he both and strategically so. You get to be part if the progressive American narrative if you sign on for the statist policy prescriptions and if you resist, disagreement is portrayed as low-grade what-you-will, greed, racism, benightedness.

And maybe he's a work-in-progress, like the country. We may see.
