I wouldn't call Taibbi a "backer," but he certainly accepted some of the McCain mythology for a long time. It's hard to remember just how incredibly positive the coverage of McCain was back in 1999-2000, but that earlier piece was one part of it. Back then, it was McCain who was supposed to be Luke Skywalker fighting the evil empire (i.e., the Republican establishment), and so you get all this gnashing of teeth about how McCain betrayed himself or has been transformed beyond recognition. A lot of people who gave him more of the benefit of the doubt don't like to think that the person they cheered eight years ago was like this, but he was.

Taibbi’s piece is also interesting in that it may be the first evidence that once-friendly and sympathetic journalists are turning on their creation, which could be doom for McCain.

Is Taibbi a former McCain backer, or at least a proponent of McCain as a "decent" Republican. I'm not a fan of Taibbi's work, so I haven't read enough to know.

As for the objections to Osteen, I don't read it as implying that Osteen is a Moral Majority style evangelical, more disappointment that his theology isn't like that of Archbishop John Spong.

I was a bit surprised to see that William Greider had written a fairly positive piece on McCain back in 1999.
