He'd say these incredibly mean things to me (like "your life has no meaning" or "our friends all hate you"), but if I took offense, he'd claim he was teasing and that I needed to lighten up. I can see this cycle of "satire" heading that direction. The original cartoon wasn't very good satire, but it was intended as a joke. Now we've just entered a world where people will make personal attack on the candidates age, or race, or alleged patriotism, and if anyone takes umbrage (which they will, these are two very hyper-sensitive campaigns), the supposed satirists will claim humor.
