More to the point, it was a near-universal anti-McCain criticism during the primaries that he was obscuring the real reasons for his opposition to the tax cuts, because he was trying to strengthen his credibility on the question in the eyes of primary voters.  His defenders prove the point when they insist that it was purely a matter of his being a deficit hawk.  Rove blew the operation by restating a truth that McCain&#039;s people have carefully tried to keep quiet, but he must also assume that his audience is stupid if he expects them to swallow this line that McCain has &quot;fessed up.&quot;</description>

As you may recall, I am so little a fan of John McCain&#039;s that I have become an actual &quot;Obamacon.&quot;  However, is this article&#039;s criticism fair?  Could Mr. McCain not have stood against the 2001 tax cut on &lt;em&gt;both&lt;/em&gt; budgetary and distributist grounds?

I do not know the answer to my own question, but the question seems worth asking.
