The Near East is what most people in this country inaccurately call the Middle East. I suppose there are plenty of people who dislike the different "East" designations for various parts of Asia, since they are European designations for regions in terms of their proximity to Europe, but I think it is the most accurate way to describe the region. Most other major European languages refer to the region this way, so I think it is the best way to avoid confusion about the area I'm discussing.

Stupid question:
Where's the Near East? I feel I should know this but I'm drawing a blank.
