Way back when McCan got the nomination a commenter (Thymezone) at Cole's site, who's been an Arizona resident since the 50's said that McCain will run the most incompetent campaign we've ever seen and will lose in a route. He even put money on it.

It is probably true that there was no chance for McCain once the crisis began.

I agree that the crisis showed McCain's true colors, or rather, his lack of. But I do believe he had a chance. If he had voted against the bailout, the base would have surged.

As it stands, the base will probably just sleep in that morning.

It has shown him to be exactly that. It has shown us the real man, who is: erratic in crisis; a reckless gambler; overly histrionic; reactive instead of thoughtful; intellectually dishonest; openly deceptive and duplicitous; obstinate; ungracious; dishonorable, contemptuous and ultimately a little nasty in the pursuit of his ambition. I'm sure if I thought about it some more, I could come up with some more unpleasant attributes. But none of those are reassuring, and they are precisely why he lost the confidence of people on all sides of the political spectrum. His political brand is forever tarnished. Fortunately for him, forever is a relatively short period of time, but unfortunately for him, that is equal to the rest of his life.
