Why does my brain keep buzzing, "Enlightenment=Guillotine"? Maybe it's my ignorance, or maybe it's the water.

Well, quite so, and I generally agree with Razib Khan's brief against the term Judeo-Christian, which has never made much sense to me. However, even if you want to think of Israel as part of the West, this front-line business is untenable. It is not necessary to question this identification to see the folly of the front-line idea.

If the Zionist project is to create a land outside of Europe (The West) for Europe's Jews, in what sense is Israel the West? The more western Israel becomes the less Jewish it is.

Before a few decades ago, who ever heard of Judeo/Christian values? This is a construct created out of whole cloth. What's next, Judeo/Muslim/Christian values?

It's so easy to push this line of thinking because of how utterly foreign and dangerous the middle-east seems to most Americans. It is so shrouded in mystery and threat that pointing to Israel and saying "Look! We share many cultural values with these people!" is easy, and more so simply due to the fact that half the Israelis interviewed on news shows are American by birth. So we share this very obvious if still somewhat superficial bond and affinity with Israel that makes it very easy for the partisan pro-Israel crowd to exploit. It's always easier to mislead people when there's at least a kernel of truth in the lie to begin with....
