Ability as an exec doesn’t seem to get anyone close to the White House. At least the guys that businessmen liked (John Connally, Phil Gramm, Mitt Romney–) haven’t gotten very far.

Of course. She has no ideas, only attitudes. “Taking on the banks” is a guaranteed loser for any candidate (Repub or Dem), and the GOP hasn’t had a foreign policy at least since 9/11.

For Palin and her admirers, politics is Us vs. Them. This is at least more focused than the Democrats, *the* party of fuzzy focus, but does America really need a GOP that looks to Carl Schmitt as its godfather?

Daniel, as far as Reagan being a mild Unitarian, I think you might be confused from the story of Reagan's statue replacing Unitarian minister Thomas Starr King in the Capitol as one of California's two official statues. Everything I've seen say Reagan was baptized Disciples of Christ and attended Presbyterian churches later in life.

Bryan did himself honor by resigning as Secretary of State when he saw Wilson’s drift or push toward entry into World War I. Instead of shilling for intervention with a bad conscience, à la Colin Powell, he resigned in protest.

I find Palin engaging, and am amused by the terror she strikes in the hearts of Ivy League feminists, but she won’t take on the banks and her foreign policy, to the extent she has one, is guided by neocons. The GOP’s voting cattle are restless. They will use Palin to divert the stampede, if they must.
