I imagine my near-asphyxiative response to Sarah Palin is shared by many of this blog’s readers, and so with the a careful eye to the fine line that separates delight from disgust, I offer you this nugget from today’s speech, taken directly from Palin’s website:
Alaska’s mission – to contribute to America. We’re strategic IN the world as the air crossroads OF the world, as a gatekeeper of the continent. Bold visionaries knew this - Alaska would be part of America’s great destiny.
Our destiny to be reached by responsibly developing our natural resources. This land, blessed with clean air, water, wildlife, minerals, AND oil and gas. It’s energy! God gave us energy.
There are certain expectations for public office that should hold for everyone who aspires to it. Speaking and writing in a language, any language, fluently, ought to be a requirement. So ought to be basic, college-level proofreading skills. Palin, it appears, lacks both. “Our destiny to be reached by responsibly developing our natural resources?” That isn’t even a sentence! And what’s with all this capitalization seemingly inserted for emphasis? That’s what we have italics for. Go here if you feel like reading the whole thing, though I wouldn’t recommend it. Just gross. If this is a sign she’s getting out of politics, great. God help us if its the first step for a presidential run. (Though it’s looking like it aint.)

I’m more confused by her employment of “responsibly”. When has responsibility ever been on the table when Mrs. Palin speaks of natural resources — or anything?
Ah, but we should be careful, H.C.: We may simply be adding fuel to the fire burned by those who contend that we’re a bunch of crypto-liberals.
