Palin Embezzlement Scandal?

Sources are saying that Sarah Palin’s sudden resignation as Alaska Governor is actually damage control because a major embezzlement scandal is about to erupt involving construction projects in her home town of Wasilla, Alaska.

Multiple sources have been digging around in the wake of Sarah Palin’s cryptic resignation speech Friday and they’ve found that when Palin was Mayor of her home town of Wasilla, AK in 2002, she was influental in the construction of the Wasilla Sports Complex and hockey arena. First of all, the $12mil+ project ended up in the hands of contractors who were friends of friends of Palin. Secondly, at around the same time the sports complex was being built, so was Palin’s new house. What’s interesting about that is the house is constructed from the exact same materials the sports complex was built with. The windows in both structures are the same, the wood is the same, pretty well everything.

When the house was being built, Palin, being Mayor at the time, influenced the bylaw requiring building permits in the town so that now there is no official list of the contractors who worked on her house.

One commenter offers a potential cold-water splash of reality, though:

Their house was built *before* the contract for the sports complex was even awarded, so I guess “about the same time” could be somewhat accurate. Also, the decision was made in May, just not publicly announced until this weekend, so I’m not sure which members of her family didn’t know, but I’ll bet if you look hard enough, you’ll find someone related to her who hadn’t heard. Oh, and as for the wood being the same as the sports complex, they both came from SBS. I’ll bet the wood I got from SBS is the “same” too. What does that say about me?

SBS is a very politically connected company. I’m not saying there isn’t something fishy going on here, I’m just saying you don’t have to reach so hard to try and paint such an ominous set of “coincidences” as you are. That’s not reporting, that’s simply pushing and agenda. Perhaps you’re looking to be hired by Fox News?

If all of this is true, I am sincerely sympathetic to her family, but I cannot help feeling the warm, tingling sensation brought on by a couple of Old Styles on Independence Day good ol’-fashioned Schadenfreude. If it is false, well, I still rejoice that Mrs. Palin has destroyed any chance she has of stepping foot in the White House as anything other than an all-too-eager tourist who just loves America, gosh darnit!

Update: Here, Conservatives for Palin dissent, posting a statement from Governor Palin’s legal counsel.

  1. Ever since Palin began campaigning with McCain, I have been hoping, praying, wishing that life here in Alaska would return to the good old days when we Alaskans were simply ignored. Unfortunately, ever since Palin decided to be ambitious at the national level, we have been mocked and showered with attention.

Nothing good came out of this.

  2. Well, Cody, I hope you can get some of that peace back now.

  3. There’s a good article on Sarah Palin in the current Vanity Fair called “It Came from Wasilla.” Very enlightening.

  4. I would still like to make sweet love to the Governor.

  5. This is a bunch of bull. Where are your sources? No foot notes. No copies of contracts. Nothing!

I am not from Alaska but the comments seem to believe something without any true knowledge or links.

  6. Mandy, I haven’t read it yet, but have heard quite a bit about it. Some have suggested that it played a direct role in influencing Palin’s decision.

    Jeff, good luck!

Bruce, click “The Inquisitr“, in the first line. That’s my source. I’m only reporting what someone else has said, without affirming or denying the veracity. Take up the lack of sources/footnotes/copies of contracts with them.

If you open your eyes and mind enough to read my entire post, which you seem not to have done, you’ll see that I also posted a comment in response to that article, in which an Alaska native suggests that the article is off-base. Again, you’ll notice that I neither say that it is or isn’t true.

Dissent and debate are welcome; ignorance, not so much.

  7. You’d think Ms. Palin would stay plenty clear of any such allegations by steering way clear of any business dealings with personal or family friends. But then again, this lady is always full of surprises.

  8. Palin is as dirty as they come an embarrassment to all of Alaska. She step down but anyone who saw her speech could tell she was lying. Trooper Gate was bad enough but this is worse, this is something that can’t be swept under the rug.

  9. You guys needs to recognized what are the facts and the fictions—–this left wing news just got refuted and anyone from the goverment media alleged that it is a facts will be brought in court.

  10. Alvin,

No one here — at least not representing Post Right — has suggested that this or isn’t fact. Again, as I note above, I’m merely drawing attention to a possible scandal-in-the-making. If you look to the bottom of the post, you’ll see that I linked to Conservtives4Palin’s rebuttal.

I’m curious about the latter part of your statement, “anyone from the government media alleged that it is a facts will be brought in court.” Could you elaborate, perhaps with a helpful link?

  11. Origer, please write a post on Alvin’s comment, a la your post on Palin’s valedictory speech.

  12. Read the entire thing paying special attention to the last paragraph.

  13. Palin opened herself up to the suggestion that she might be about to be caught in a scandal, when she resigned for no rational reason. EIther she is just crazy ( a distinct possibility) or wants to get on the gravy train of talk shows and personal appearances, but her suggestion that she is doing the right thing by resigning (and so avoiding the inevitable wasting of taxpayers money on trade missions and other lame duck behavior) is ridiculous. If we go along with Palin’s logic we would have to believe that every poitician who cannot of does not want to run again, should immediately resign. Her logic would also suggest that every second term President should immediately resign becuase he/she is a lame duck, obviously a ridiculous notion on the face of it.

  14. Kakypat, you’re not suggesting that I should fear being taken to court, are you? That’s as laughable as that oft-mocked quip about “being able to see Russia” qualifying Mrs. Palin w/r/t foreign affairs.

  15. I’m not suggesting anything, just responding to your query.

“I’m curious about the latter part of your statement, “anyone from the government media alleged that it is a facts will be brought in court.” Could you elaborate, perhaps with a helpful link?”

  16. Gotcha, kakypat. Thanks for the clarification. Alvin’s confusing bit about government media made the jump a little confusing for me, but not it makes sense.

  17. I’ve notice the use of “government media” or “state-run media” frequently by conservative commenters lately. Where did this come from? Is Limbaugh using this phrase now? Hannity? Levin? Beck?

Good luck with those law suits, Miss Sarah. One little problem you might encounter, though. When one brings a civil suit, one has to sit down and be deposed under oath. Some of these boys are going to have themselves some high powered New York-style lawyers. They are going to be a tough bunch and, I would think, more than an even match against the guys from Wasilla. My prediction is you will not find giving a depostion in any way a pleasant experience.

  18. You do know that that “oft-mocked quip about “being able to see Russia” qualifying Mrs. Palin w/r/t foreign affairs” was made by Tine Fey and NOT Sarah Palin don’t you?

  19. Yes, Frankly, but Ms. Fey was playing off a comment that Mrs. Palin did embarrassingly make.

  20. Frankly MD, Sara Palin did make the comment that she could see Russia from her house. She is one sharp lady (you betcha).

  21. I’ve read about this on a few websites. But not anything from the AP or any other serious news agency. Til then, i’ll file this under bull ….
btw - she’s one of the hottest 40-something year old women on earth…

  22. Frankly MD - thats kindof like bush and “strategery”… there’s no telling how many people think that was a bushism when actually it was from a SNL skit that will ferrell did.
