This, of course, is sterling proof of the first rule of counter-terrorism - terrorists are sane, rational people, unlike the editors of Commentary magazine.  Specifically, that al-Qaeda knows exactly what its doing by threatening to waterboard an American POW, to put the U.S. into precisely the wrenching dilemma that Jack describes.
