Yes, remember, remember the fifth of November, for the martyrdom of he who could have spared merry old England four centuries at the head of the rapacious empire that proclaimed the white man’s burden and set the stage for the inglorious American imperium that now faces its final comeuppance – and yes, could have also saved the freedom of Scotland and Ireland.

Save Scotland and Ireland from what? They already had the same monarch as England. He was Scottish.
But you do echo the traditional description of Guy Fawkes as “the last man to enter the Palace of Westminster with an honorable intention”, i.e., to blow it up.
Which makes it all the more surprising and disappointing that he is not being commemorated with gusto in this of all years.
Is there actually solid evidence that Fawkes et al. were guilty of anything beyond disloyalty to the crown? Or might it not have been a Reichstag Fire in and of itself?
Oh no, they did it.
How convincing.
