Just caught his latest rant about the radicals in the Obama Administration, focusing on the unsympathetic example of one time black Marxist “green jobs czar” Van Jones. But in a flash of Beck’s total ignorance, in one of his melodramatic flourishes about saving the republic he invoked the Spanish Republican slogan “They shall not pass”.

I suppose “Listener” is right. Obviously, it is highly unlikely that Glenn Beck is capable of making a cultural reference more than ten years old.
-
I.A. Brooks, what brings you to that conclusion? Although I can agree with his critics that Beck’s a little on the kooky side, he doesn’t lack intelligence.
-
Listener, what brings you to the conclusion that Glenn Beck has anything more than mediocre intelligence? Or education? I don’t watch his show very often, but he certainly seems to be nothing remarkable, and (pertinent to this discussion) very likely knows far more about “The Fellowship of the Ring” than the Spanish Civil War. God bless General Franco.

Glenn Beck has in actuality joined the French 2nd army. If his motto is “They shall not pass!” It is for him 1916, the place is Verdun, and his commander is none other than Henri Petain.
I’m sure that armies from time immemorial used this saying. I cannot imagine the Romans not saying it in the 5th Century AD.

I.A. Brooks – Hmmm [checking previous post] nope, I didn’t say anything about Mr. Beck’s level of intelligence or education. I only asked what made you think he was incapable of making a cultural reference more than ten years old. You didn’t answer that. I also don’t consider him to be anything remarkable, however I don’t consider him to be stupid either. I don’t presume to know which topic Mr. Beck knows more about but I suppose it’s fun for his critics to speculate. For a dummy, he’s done pretty darn good for himself.
T.O. Meehan if you would read my first reply you would see the context of the “You shall not pass” comment.

“For a dummy, he’s done pretty well for himself” Oh yes, quite a few people of all sorts have done pretty well for themselves, and not all of them “dummies” either. The late too-much lamented Ted Hero-of-Chappaquiddick Kennedy did pretty well for himself, Bernard Madoff did pretty well for himself–until someone questioned why exactly he was doing so well. Even a parvenu called Adolf Hitler did pretty well for himself, until the world came down on his head. Worldly success proves what exactly, my dear Listener? And by the way, before you explode in righteous indignation, no I am not comparing the ridiculous Glenn Beck to any of the three mentioned above.
-
I.A. Brooks, you are too funny thinking you needed to head off my “righteous indignation” lol. Really unnecessary. Apparently you can’t answer my question so no need to prolong this. Bash away at Mr. Beck even though you can’t substantiate your position. He’s laughing all the way to the bank. :^) Oh btw, the incorrect grammar was intentional; I guess it went over your head lol. Feel free to have the last word. I’m gone. Bye!

Listener, I did read you comment. Mine was perhaps a bit vague so I’ll translate. The most prominent usage of “They (or You in this case) shall not pass) came from Marshal Petain in 1916. It’s in Tolkien’s book because he was deeply moved and influenced by his experience of the trenches in WWI. There are many such allusions in his work.

Who is the ignorant one? Try paying attention. http://www.glennbeck.com/content/articles/article/198/29627/
GLENN: …Nothing they’re going to come back now and they are going to try to compromise. Nothing. Where’s the audio? “You shall not pass!” We must be like Gandalf and nothing, nothing can be allowed to pass.
GANDALF: You shall not pass!
